US small farmers connected to Central American coffee farms

How are small farmers in the US connected to Central American coffee farms?
There are more than 2,500 local farmer cooperatives across the US. A majority of farmers belong to one or more of them. Empowering faarmers goes back over 200 years with the first dairy and cheese cooperatives were organized. Outside the US, cooperatives have played a key role in helping the small farmers find an edge in the market. Small farmers play an essential role in keeping us all fed. By organizing through cooperatives, they can have a stronger voice and greater chance to create a better future for themselves in today marketplace. This the heart of Fair Trade.
